To know what happened
Safety record
South Korea's aviation safety record is pretty good. This is the first time a Jeju Air plane has crashed.
Earlier, a Bombardier Q400 model of Jeju Air with 74 passengers had skidded off the runway. Strong winds were the cause of the accident. The August 12, 2007 crash at Busan-Gimhae Airport in southern South Korea injured many but did not kill anyone.
Government initiative
South Korea has recently been going through a deep political crisis. The country saw three presidents within a month. The accident happened three days after the current acting President Choi Sang Mok took office. He has already held a meeting with cabinet members and visited the accident site to discuss rescue operations and other measures. Seven days of mourning have been announced.
