Egypt and the Arab League have rejected US President Donald Trump's proposal to "vacate Gaza" for the forced relocation of Palestinians.
The Times of Israel reported this in a report on Monday (January 27).
Trump spoke to reporters on Air Force One on Saturday. "You're probably talking about 1.5 million people and we're going to evacuate the whole place," he said.
In a statement, Cairo's foreign ministry reiterated its "unwavering support for the Palestinian people to live in their land".
The ministry said it would not accept "any interference with the inalienable rights" of dispossessing Palestinians from land through land grabs, annexations or transfers, however temporary or long-term.
After 15 months of war, Trump said Gaza was now a "pile of rubble" and he wanted Egypt and Jordan to relocate Gazans there. He said it could be 'temporary or long-term'.
The Arab League reiterated Cairo's statement, saying, "Forcible displacement and uprooting of Palestinians from their land can only be termed as genocide."
"Attempts to uproot the Palestinian people from their land, whether through relocation, annexation or settlement, have repeatedly failed in the past," the regional body added.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned that attempts to relocate Palestinians would be an attempt to erase the goal of establishing a Palestinian state.
Sisi described it as a "red line" that could threaten Egypt's national security.
Egypt's foreign ministry has called for a 'two-state solution', saying it will not be possible if Palestinians leave their territory.
On the other hand, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said, "We strongly reject the displacement of Palestinians and will remain steadfast." Jordan is for the Jordanian people and Palestine is for the Palestinian people'.
