US President Donald Trump has also threatened to impose sanctions on Russia by asking him to sit down for talks on the Ukraine war.

On Thursday night (January 23), the BBC reported that the Russian authorities had responded to Trump's threat.  A Kremlin statement said they were ready to "negotiate on the basis of equality and mutual respect".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "We don't see any such new messages."  But we are ready to negotiate on the basis of equality, with mutual respect.”

"Stop this senseless war now," Trump warned Russia on his platform Truth Social on Wednesday.  Otherwise face high levels of sanctions, taxes and duties.'

Regarding such threats, Peskov said, Trump chose the path of sanctions even in his first presidency, which is nothing new for Russia.

Moscow hopes Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump will soon discuss the Ukraine war by phone.  However, Russia's Deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyansky said that it is necessary to know first what kind of agreement Trump wants to end the war.

Russia has made significant military advances in recent weeks.  In addition, both Moscow and Kiev have intensified airstrikes in areas far from the frontline.

Russia has been under a series of Western sanctions since it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.  Peskov admits that Russia is facing economic problems.  However, claims that Moscow retains enough assets to meet its military needs.

Despite Trump's threats, the Kremlin's message of readiness for dialogue could open up new possibilities in the diplomatic arena.  However, it will depend on the basis of negotiations and peace agreement proposals of both sides.
